US-based carbon recycling company, LanzaTech Global, has entered into a strategic partnership with Abu Dhabi Waste Management Company (Tadweer), the primary authority overseeing waste management in Abu Dhabi. The collaboration aims to initiate an integrated waste-to-sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) feasibility study to scale SAF production from municipal and commercial solid waste, reported Zawya.
LanzaTech specializes in transforming waste carbon into sustainable raw materials for various products through its innovative biorecycling technology. This process captures carbon emissions from energy-intensive industries at the source, repurposing it as a clean substitute for virgin fossil carbon in products ranging from household items and clothing fibers to packaging and fuels.
According to experts, the proposed facility is likely to see up to 350,000 tonnes of hard-to-recycle municipal and commercial solid waste getting transformed into 200,000 tonnes of ethanol per year, ultimately producing 120,000 tonnes of SAF annually.
Ali Al Dhaheri, Managing Director and CEO of Tadweer, highlighted the waste management sector’s potential to reduce nearly 1.8 gigatonnes of CO2 emissions annually. He expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with LanzaTech to develop a waste-to-SAF solution, aligning with their commitment to establishing a sustainable waste management system in the Emirate and contributing to a circular economy.
Jennifer Holmgren, CEO of LanzaTech, emphasized the significance of recycling municipal solid waste to produce sustainable aviation fuel at scale. The collaboration with Tadweer presents an opportunity to address the climate crisis by simultaneously managing waste and reducing the carbon footprint of air travel.
Majed Al Marzouqi, Project Manager of the Waste-to-Sustainable Aviation Fuel (WTSAF) initiative under Tadweer, stressed the project’s role in supporting the UAE’s National SAF Road Map. He highlighted its commitment to adhering to global environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) standards, positioning the UAE as a leader in sustainable SAF production.
