Latur-based sugar mill to use press mud to manufacture bio CNG

Pune: Natural Sugar and Allied Industries’ sugar mill in Osmanabad is planning to use press mud to manufacture bio CNG, reports The Indian Express.

This technology will help the mills to reutilise the agricultural waste which is now used as manure, said Bhairavnath B. Thombare, chairman and managing director of the sugar mill.

Press mud is the waste material obtained after repeatedly filtering cane juice before being sent for extraction of sugar. The waste material is deposited into the yard of the mill. On average 3 to 4% of press mud is obtained from crushing one tonne of cane.

“The press mud can be further processed and sold to the fuel company as bio CNG,” he said.

A pilot plant is operating at Warna Cooperative Sugar Mill in Kolhapur and the plant in Osmanabad would use 100 tonnes of press mud per day to produce 5-6 tonnes of bio CNG.
