Madhya Pradesh: Education Department to establish ‘sugar board’ in schools

The Education Department of Madhya Pradesh is introducing a “sugar board” in every school across the state to educate students about diabetes prevention. In addition to this initiative, workshops will also be held for children.

Acting on the recommendation of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, the Education Department has issued a directive to all District Education Officers. According to the news report, the move aims to tackle the rising incidence of diabetes among children, attributed to unhealthy eating habits.

The sugar boards will help students understand which health issues are linked to excessive sugar intake, identify sugar-rich items, and recognize what constitutes junk food.

Jabalpur’s District Education Officer, Ghanshyam Soni, confirmed that discussions have taken place with the Chief Medical Officer and that the boards will soon be installed in all government and private schools in the district.

He added, “Workshops focusing on diabetes-related topics will also be held in schools. All schools are required to set up the boards within 30 days, and workshops will be conducted at the beginning of the next academic session.”
