Maharajganj: Farmers shying away from sugarcane cultivation

Ghughali, Maharajganj: Sugarcane farmers in region are shying away from sugarcane crops due to delayed payments and mismanagement by sugar mills, threatening sugar production in the region, reported Amarujala.

As per media report, data from the sugarcane committee shows a decline of 543.862 hectares in sugarcane area over the past two years, falling from 4525.1487 hectares in 2022-23 to 3982.625 hectares in 2023-24. Around 2,000 farmers have stopped cultivating sugarcane.

The primary reason for this is delayed payments from sugar mills. “I stopped cultivating sugarcane as we are not getting cane payments in time,” said a farmer from the region. “Sugarcane used to be a source of income, but now the delays are unbearable.”

“The department encourages farmers to grow sugarcane and facilitates timely payments,” countered Hari Narayan Yadav, the chief sugarcane inspector.
