Pune: Sugar mills in Maharashtra are projected to crush around 1,413 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, said state sugar commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad, reports news agency PTI
Out of 246 sugar mills in the state, 203 are likely to participate in the cane-crushing operations this season. So far 35 mills have obtained permission to start crushing operations, he said.
“From this year, mills have to pay Rs 10 for every tonne of sugarcane to the Sugarcane Cutting Labor Corporation. The mills that have obtained permission will have to pay the first installment of Rs 3 per tonne to the corporation,” said Gaikwad.
The crushing season was slated to start on October 1 but the date has been extended by 15 days.
Maharashtra mills have produced 137 lakh tonnes of sugar by crushing 1420 lakh tonnes of cane in the 2021-22 season. The production is likely to go up by one lakh tonne this season.
