38 sugar mills in Maharashtra have ended crushing operations so far in the current season, compared to 109 mills during same period in the pervious season, data from the Sugar Commissionerate showed.
Sugar recovery has also seen a marginal increase this season, at 10.13 per cent as of March 12, 2024, compared to 9.94 per cent last year.
Of the 207 sugar mills that participated in the crushing this season, including 103 cooperative and 104 private mills, 978.01 lakh tonnes of sugarcane have been crushed so far, and 990.53 lakh quintals (99.05 lakh tonnes) of sugar produced.
In comparison, 211 mills had crushed 1021.02 lakh tonnes of sugarcane and produced 1015.13 lakh quintals (101.51 lakh tonnes) of sugar in the previous season during the same period.
So far, six sugar mills in Kolhapur division, 10 sugar mills in Solapur division, five in Pune division, four in Ahmednagar division, eight sugar mills in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar division, and five sugar mills in Nanded division have closed their crushing season.
