Maharashtra : Farmers in Sindhudurg district worry as cane output lowers to 50,000 tonnes this season

Vaibhavwadi: The sugarcane harvest in the district has been completed, with a total production of 50,000 tonnes recorded this season. The average yield per hectare stands at 45 tonnes, compared to last year’s 52,000 tonnes produced from 1,160 hectares. The decrease in production has caused concern among farmers, reports Sakal.

Currently, sugarcane is cultivated on 1,100 hectares in the district, with Vaibhavwadi and Kankavali having the largest cultivation areas. Smaller sugarcane farms are also present in Malvan, Kudal, and Sawantwadi. Most of the harvested crop is sent to Dr. D.Y. Patil Sugar Factory, while some is transported to Radhanagari for processing.

The harvest began in November this year. Due to the closure of Karul Ghat, sugarcane transportation was carried out via Bhuibavda Ghat. The harvest progressed slowly until February, but after the sugar factory increased the cutting mechanisms, the process was expedited, and the harvest was completed by March 6.

This year, farmers are receiving ₹3,150 per tonne from the sugar factory.

In the past, sugarcane cultivation in the district covered 1,700 hectares, with production reaching 1.05 lakh tonnes. However, harvesting challenges over the past few years have discouraged many farmers from continuing with sugarcane farming. As a result, the cultivation area has steadily declined.
