Maharashtra: Gangamai sugar mill collaborates with Mahindra for AI-powered sugarcane harvesting

Gangamai sugar mill, in partnership with Mahindra & Mahindra, reaches a major milestone by integrating cutting-edge AI and remote sensing technology into its operations. It has become the first private sugar mill in Maharashtra to adopt such advanced methods for sugarcane harvesting, marking a transformative step for the industry toward enhanced productivity and sustainability.

The partnership combines Mahindra’s expertise in satellite imaging and AI tools to enhance sugarcane monitoring. The advanced technology uses multispectral satellite data to assess the vegetation index of sugarcane crops while factoring in weather conditions. An AI model processes this data and predicts sugar recovery rates with 95% accuracy. This method has been validated weekly in Gangamai’s laboratory to ensure precise harvesting planning.

Key highlights for the 2024-25 season
AI-based harvest planning: A pioneering initiative among Maharashtra’s private sugar mills.

Sugarcane crushed: A total of 8,80,975 metric tonnes processed, achieving over a 10% sugar recovery rate.

Higher recovery rates: Marked improvement over the previous season’s performance.

Satellite monitoring: Provides farmers with early warnings about pests and diseases, enabling timely interventions.

Positive impact on farmers
The implementation of this technology has already delivered promising results. It has not only boosted sugar recovery but also cut down operational costs. Monitoring of 1,500 farmers’ fields helps detect pest outbreaks and water stress early, empowering farmers to respond quickly and improve crop yields.
