The sugarcane season in Maharashtra for 2023-24 is nearing its end as 7 sugar mills in the state are crushing cane, with the sugar production reported around 110 lakh tonnes. Apart from this, there has been more sugar production in the state compared to the previous season.
According to a report from the Sugar Commissioner’s office, a total of 207 sugar mills participated in sugarcane crushing this season. This includes 103 cooperative and 104 private sugar mills, with around 1069.09 lakh tonnes of sugarcane already crushed. By April 23, 2024, the state has produced a total of 1096.73 lakh quintals (109.67 lakh tonnes) of sugar. During the same period in the previous season, 211 sugar mills participated in sugarcane crushing, and crushed 1053.91 lakh tonnes of sugarcane to produce 1052.3 lakh quintals (105.23 lakh tonnes) of sugar.
In the current season in Maharashtra, 200 sugar mills have closed down sugarcane crushing operations compared to 211 mills in the previous season. Additionally, there is a slight increase in sugar recovery this season.
As of April 23, 2024, the sugar recovery in the state for the 2023-24 season stands at 10.26 per cent, whereas it was 10.00 per cent during the same period in the previous season.
