Only 15 sugar mills in Maharashtra have stopped crushing operations so far in the current season, compared to 65 mills during same period in the pervious season, data from the Sugar Commissionerate showed.
Sugar recovery has also seen a marginal increase this season, at 10.06% as of March 03, 2024, compared to 9.92% last year.
Of the 207 sugar mills that participated in the crushing this season, including 103 cooperative and 104 private mills, 925.89 lakh tonnes of sugarcane have been crushed so far, and 931.72 lakh quintals (93.17 lakh tonnes) of sugar produced.
In comparison, 211 mills had crushed 982.39 lakh tonnes of sugarcane and produced 974.89 lakh quintals of sugar in the previous season during the same period.
So far, two sugar mills in Kolhapur division, four sugar mills in Solapur division, one in Pune division, one in Ahmednagar division, six sugar mills in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar division, and one sugar mill in Nanded division have closed their crushing season.
