Pune: The continuous rainfall in the state has already damaged the standing sugarcane crop in the fields. Now farmers are hoping to take Rabi crops to recover the losses and have demanded the sugar mills to start cane crushing early and harvest cane from the fields so that their fields are cleared for Rabi cultivation.
The farmers from the jurisdiction of Someshwar and Malegaon sugar mill met Sugar commissioner and put forward their demands to start crushing season early.
The delay in the formation of government in Maharashtra has already delayed the crushing season. After the President’s rule imposed in the state, the state sugar commissioner office has recommended to commence crushing season from November 25.
Flood in Pune, Sangli, Satara, Solapur and Kolhapur districts, the sugar belt of Maharashtra, have majorly hit the sugarcane crops, which will ultimately be going to impact the sugarcane production in Maharashtra. Also, farmers have uprooted sugarcane in the severely drought-affected regions of the state to feed their animals as other green fodders were not available. It will also likely to impact sugar output in Maharashtra.
