For the 2020-21 season, Maharashtra is leading in the sugar exports in the country with accounting for nearly 50% of total exports. The sugar mills from the state have signed export contracts for 20 lakh tonne of sugar as against total contracts of 43 lakh tonne of sugar.
Maharashtra has so far produced 979.51 lakh quintal of sugar by crushing 939.28 lakh tonne of cane. Total 187 sugar mills had participated in the cane crushing operations and out of these 61 have closed their operations.
The government has set a target of exporting 60 lakh tonne of sugar and so far contracts of 43 lakh tonne sugar have been signed. The mills have physically dispatched 21.40 lakh tonne of sugar from mills and 16.30 lakh tonne sugar has been exported.
