Sugarcane crushing season in Maharashtra is in the final stage with 34 sugar mills out of 198 sugar mills having ended their crushing operations as compared to 118 mills out of 190 mills that had stopped operations last year as on April, 3 2021.
The state has crushed 1157.31 LMT of cane and produced 120.44 LMT of sugar in comparison to 974.58 LMT of sugarcane crushed and 102.01 LMT of sugar produced last year on April, 3 2021. The average recovery rate recorded during this season is 10.41% in comparison to 10.47% in the previous season. The state is expected to record an all-time high production of sugar at around 128 to 130 lakh tonnes owing to rise in per hectare production. In the previous year the sugar production recorded was 107 LMT.
According to Mr. Shekhar Gaikwad, Sugar commissioner – Maharashtra, the crushing season would stretch till May, 31 2022 with mainly mills in Marathwada continuing their crushing operations. He said, “We are ensuring that no crop is left in any field even if mills have completed crushing yield from their allotted areas. We are also taking the necessary measures to prepare for a timely harvest in the next sugar season.”
