Meerut: Sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district are facing a shortage of sugarcane, a month after the start of the 2023-24 season, reported Live Hindustan.
The average capacity utilization of the five mills in Meerut is only 75-80%, well below their full capacity. None of the mills are operating at their full capacity.
Farmers are also unable to supply sugarcane to the mills as they are facing a shortage of labor.
Officials say that the shortage of sugarcane is due to the festive season. They expect the supply of sugarcane to improve after the festive season ends.
The sugarcane crushing season in Meerut began on October 29 with the start of operations at the Kinauni mill. Now, five of the six mills in the district are crushing sugarcane. The Mohiuddinpur sugar mill is still not operational.
According to information, no mill in Meerut has been able to operate at its full capacity so far. The mills are not getting enough sugarcane to operate at their full capacity.
