Meghalaya’s Chief Minister taken steps to ensure that smuggling of sugar is stopped: Marcuise N Marak

Shillong: Amidst allegations that the Meghalaya government has become a silent spectator to the rampant smuggling of sugar to Bangladesh through the international borders in Garo Hills, Cabinet Minister and government spokesperson Marcuise N Marak has placed the responsibility on the Customs and the BSF to address the illegal activities, reported The Shillong Times.

Responding to a query about the state government’s inaction in curbing the illegal smuggling of sugar, Marak stated that smuggling should not occur, and if it does, the BSF and the Customs must check it, as they are the appropriate authorities to guard the borders.

Marak mentioned that Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had taken measures to ensure that sugar smuggling is halted. “The chief minister has addressed the issue. We rely on the BSF and the Customs since they are responsible for monitoring the border,” he said.

Marak also denied accusations that the government has ignored the illegal trade.
