Union Jal Minister Gajendra Sinh Shekhawat has stated that the use of micro irrigation systems for water-intensive sugarcane crops has played a major role in the growth of quality crops in Haryana and Maharashtra, according to abplive.
He was speaking at a Budget session in Parliament.
The minister tabled the information in the Parliament while replying to a question asked by an MP stating that we are virtually exporting water while exporting sugar, rice, and wheat as they are water-intensive crops.
The government is taking all possible steps to reduce the use of water for irrigation and is promoting micro irrigation. This is helping the agriculture sector to save 20% of water. The progress in micro irrigation has been made in states like Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, he said.
