New Delhi: Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari has urged the vehicle manufacturers to speed up the manufacturing of the flex-fuel variants.
According to the media report published in The Times of India, citing the recent fuel crisis due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, he said that it was high time to go for alternate fuel and reduce dependence on imported petrol and diesel to meet energy requirements.
“The recent global crisis has forced us to look inward and find our solution. The flex-fuel vehicles can play a major role in the future,” he said.
In a meeting held on Wednesday that was attended by automakers and their representatives, he asked the automakers to prepare a detailed presentation about the issues they are facing to manufacture engines that can run both on petrol and petrol blended with 20-85% of ethanol (E20 to E85).
India, the world’s third-biggest oil importer, depends on foreign supply to meet its 80 per cent demand. To save on foreign expenditure, last year, the country announced to increase ethanol blending by 20 per cent by 2025 which was earlier set at 2030.
