The Prime Minister of Fiji Voreqe Bainimarama stated that the Ministry of Sugar does not regulate the sugar prices and nor influences the prices. The PM also holds the portfolio of the Sugar Ministry.
According to the media report, he was speaking after the National Federation Party (NFP) MP; Pio Tikoduadua, questioned whether the Fiji Sugar Corporation consulted his ministry on its submission to the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission seeking a 100 per cent rise of processed sugar.
The PM addressing the Parliament said that the NFP should first learn the process of the FCCC that decides the prices of sugar and then it won’t raise such useless questions.
The Ministry of Sugar was invited to suggest opinions when the FCCC started the key process, he said.
The PM stated that the last review of domestic sugar prices was done in 2017. The FSC has proposed to increase the price of 1 kg sugar from $1.40 to $2.89 and the price of 2 kg sugar from $2.81 to $5.78.
