Ministry seeks clarification from Pakistan Sugar Mills Association on increase in sugar prices

Domestic sugar prices have risen following the recent government clearance for the export of 150,000 tonnes of sugar. The retail price of sweeteners jumped to Rs 147.71 per kg, according to the Pakistani media Samma.

The Ministry has taken cognizance of the price hike and has asked the PSMA to explain the reason behind the sudden increase. The Ministry is even mulling suspending the export quota given to sugar mills previously given if price rise continues.

A meeting with the committee scrutinizing sugar exports and the Sugar Advisory Board has been scheduled to discuss the issue. A review of the situation will be taken to evolve a strategy to contain the price increase.

Apart from the price issue, the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association has also been under fire for not clearing the outstanding dues of the farmers.
