Navjot Singh Sidhu demands hike in sugarcane price

Chandigarh: Supporting the agitation of the sugarcane farmers in Punjab, state congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu has demanded the government to hike State Assured Price (SAP) for sugarcane.

Interestingly Punjab is governed by the Congress party under leadership of Capt. Amarinder Singh.

Citing that SAP in Punjab is lower compared to neighbouring states like Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Haryana, he tweeted on a microblogging social network site, “The sugarcane farmers issue needs to be immediately resolved amicably …. Strange that despite the higher cost of cultivation in Punjab the state assured price is too low as compared to Haryana / UP / Uttarakhand. As torchbearer of agriculture, the Punjab SAP should be better !”

Sugarcane farmers in Punjab have started a protest from August 20 demanding a hike in SAP and clearance of pending cane dues.
