Nepal: After protest, Rautahat farmers start receiving payment from sugar mill

Rautahat: As the Sugarcane farmers intensify their agitation against the pending cane dues at Kathmandu, now mills under pressure have started paying the pending cane dues. The Shree Ram Sugar mill, Garuda has started depositing the cane bills to the bank accounts of the sugarcane farmers.

The mill has forwarded Rs 350 million to the cane farmers against the sugarcane purchased from them. Apart from agitation, the farmers association has filed a case against sugar mill over fraud and the police have issued an arrest warrant against the operator of the sugar mill.

The home ministry has supported the farmers’ stand. According to the sugarcane production association, Rautahat, from last six years, the mill has not paid arrears worth Rs 410 million to the cane farmers. The mill has agreed to clear the dues but initiated process after farmers intensified their agitation.
