Nepal: Sugarcane farmers awaiting payment from sugar mills

Kathmandu: Like India, sugarcane farmers in Nepal too is affected due to Coronaviris (Covid-19). The Coronavirus pandemic has increased the worries of sugarcane growers who are already financially distressed. All the activities have been stopped due to lockdown and millers are unable to clear the cane arrears.

The farmers had planned agitation in March against the mills for their demand but had to discontinue plans as the lockdown was imposed.

According to the media report, sugarcane harvesting starts in January and ends by March. Initially, all the mills were not operating as they were yet to clear pending arrears and when they began operations the government imposed lockdown to prevent the spread of Coronavirus.

Farmers said, “Now we all are waiting for mills to clear pending arrears. We had planned agitation on March 17 but had to discontinue due to lockdown.”
