Nepal sugarcane farmers demand payment of pending cane arrears

Kathmandu, Nepal: The sugarcane farmers are demanding from the government to take action against the sugar millers to clear their pending cane arrears. However, the situation has become complicated due to mismatch in the outstanding amount as per the calculations done by the farmers and the government.

Rakesh Mishra, patron of Sugarcane Farmers Struggle Committee stated that in Sarlahi district alone more than 6,000 sugarcane farmers await the arrears of around Rs 360 million, which include Rs 300 million from Annapurna Sugar and General Industries from last five years and Rs 60 million from Mahalaxmi Sugar Mill. The total outstanding amount of farmers is more than Rs 1.2 billion.

Urmila KC, the undersecretary and assistant spokesperson of the department said that most of the sugar mills have cleared the dues to the cane farmers.

“We have requested the Home Ministry to issue instructions to concerned authorities to recalculate the dues and ensure that the mills clear our dues,” Mishra further added.
