Kathmandu: Sugarcane farmers launched a protest at Maitighar in the Capital on Sunday demanding the pending cane arrears from the sugar mills. They launched agitation after the mills failed to act as per the five-point agreement they had agreed in January to clear the cane dues to the farmers.
Hundreds of farmers from Sarlahi had organized agitation for the same demand in last December. The cane farmers had withdrawn their agitation in the first week of January after the government assured them of getting the dues cleared from the sugar mills by January 21. However 11 months have passed since the assurance, the farmers are yet to receive pending cane dues. The farmers had planned to launch agitation at Kathmandu but had to postpone it due to the coronavirus pandemic.
