The National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF) on Sunday revised the sugar production estimates to 259 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) for the sugarcane crushing season of 2024-25. The recent estimate is 6 lakh tonnes lower than the earlier projection of 265 LMT. In the previous season, sugar production was 319 lakh tonnes.
According to data released by the NFCSF, as of March 15, 2025, crushing for the 2024-25 season is underway in 204 sugar mills across the country. A total of 2545.17 lakh tonnes of sugarcane have been crushed, resulting in the production of 237.15 lakh tonnes of sugar. In comparison, during the same period in the previous season, 358 sugar mills were operational, and crushing had reached 2841.48 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, yielding 282.70 lakh tonnes of sugar.
The sugar recovery rate in the country is lower than in the previous season. As of March 15, 2025, the average sugar recovery rate stands at 9.32%, compared to 9.95% during the same period in the previous season.
As per NFCSF data, in terms of state-wise production, mills in Maharashtra have crushed 831.75 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 78.60 lakh tonnes of sugar.
In Uttar Pradesh, sugar mills have crushed 843.23 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, yielding 80.95 lakh tonnes of sugar. Sugar production in Karnataka has reached 39.10 lakh tonnes after crushing 460.00 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, according to the sugar body.
Experts say the decline in sugar production across the three major producing states—Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh—has contributed to the drop in production figures for this crushing season.
