A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish Sugar Institute in Ilorin, Kwara State was signed between the National Sugar Development Council (NSDC), Abuja and National Sugar Institute (NSI), Kanpur, India on Wednesday.
Dr Latif Busari, Executive Secretary of NSDC and Narendra Mohan, Director, NSI, Kanpur, India signed the pact at the High Commission of India in Abuja.
Busari said, “Nigeria aims to increase sugar production through National Sugar Master plan which was implemented in 2013. Busari stated that the MoU is important to train staff to develop sugar mills in the country. Nigeria plans to become self-sufficient in terms of sugar production.”
Narendra Mohan said, “Sugar production in Nigeria is very low as compared with the demand. The establishment of the sugar industry in the country is important and the availability of trained manpower is the need of the hour.”
