Nigeria reduces domestic sugar production target

Abuja: The Nigerian Sugar Development Council (NSDC) has projected the domestic sugar production to one million tonnes from 1.7 million metric tonnes by 2023.

NSDC executive secretary Dr. Latif Busari disclosed the information during a press meet on Tuesday in Abuja. Citing that the progress made so far is commendable, he said that the inability of some sugar mills to increase crushing capacity resulted in reviewing the target.

“The target of 1.7 million metric tonnes production by 2023 was ambitious, but the reviewed target is also good. Strict check on borders has reduced entry of smuggling foreign sugar into the Nigerian market. This will boost the local production and help local refineries,” he further added.
