Nigeria seeks Chinese expertise to boost sugar industry

In a bid to revamp Nigeria’s sugar industry, the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (NCSP) has initiated discussions with the National Sugar Development Council (NSDC) on a potential collaboration with the Chinese government, reports Business Day.

Joseph Tegbe, Director General of NCSP, hosted a delegation from the NSDC led by Executive Secretary Kamar Bakrin, emphasising the untapped potential within Nigeria’s sugar sector. Tegbe highlighted that the partnership aims to harness Chinese expertise and technology to enhance local sugar production, ensuring it meets both domestic demand and international market standards.

He further noted that Nigeria’s local sugar industry, currently valued at $2 billion per year, stands to benefit significantly from this collaboration. “With the right transformation, Nigeria could capture a considerable portion of the global sugar market, particularly with China’s demand for imports,” he added.

The meeting focused on establishing a working relationship between the two organizations and identifying opportunities for cooperation that could drive growth in Nigeria’s sugar industry through strategic collaboration with China.
