NSI resorts to use of treated sewage water for irrigation and horticulture purposes

In an effort to reduce fresh water usage, National Sugar Institute, Kanpur has resorted to use of treated sewage water for irrigation and horticulture purposes.

The institute commissioned a Sewage Treatment Plant for treatment of sewage for its colony and office buildings based on “Moving Bed Bio Reactor Technology”. The outlet from this plant is further treated through multi grade filter and active carbon filter to make it suitable for horticulture and irrigation purposes.

Initially, we have aimed at using it for our sports ground and experimental farm, said Shri Narendra Mohan, Director. We shall also try to assess any impact of use of treated sewage on sugarcane productivity and quality. Although the quality of treated sewage is conforming to norms as reflected from the values of BOD, COD and pH etc., yet we are planning to improve it further by incorporating an additional step of treatment with Ozone.

Since, sugar factories and distilleries also have residential complexes, now during the visit of institute experts to these units, necessary advice is being provided to them for establishing such units so as address environmental issues and saving water for irrigation, horticulture, toilet flushing or for other indirect usage, informed Shri Narendra Mohan, Director.
