Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government is taking an important step to protect the environment and reduce pollution by promoting the use of ethanol made from farm waste. A company called Midwest Limited made a presentation at Lok Seva Bhawan, where it shared plans to set up an ethanol plant in the state and encourage the use of ethanol as a fuel.
Company representative Prabhakar Reddy spoke about how ethanol-blended fuel could be used in boats running on Chilika Lake. This idea supports the Central Government’s goal of mixing ethanol into diesel. Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo said he was confident that Odisha would make progress toward this goal.

The ethanol will be made from crop stubble like paddy straw, which is often burned by farmers and causes air pollution. The company plans to buy this farm waste from farmers, giving them a new way to earn money. This will not only help reduce pollution but also create jobs, improve the rural economy, and reduce the need for hard manual work.
The project may also use leftover parts of other crops like sugarcane, maize, and bajra to make ethanol. Top leaders including Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo, Law and Works Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, and Industries Minister Sampada Chandra Swain attended the presentation.
Other senior officials who were present included Dr. Arabinda Kumar Padhee, Principal Secretary of the Agriculture and Farmers Empowerment Department; Vishal Deb, Principal Secretary of the Energy Department; Balwant Singh, Commissioner and Secretary of the Tourism Department; and Bhupendra Singh Punia, Managing Director of EPCL.
