New Delhi: According to the sources, the Central Government has imposed an immediate ban on the export of organic sugar from India. The notification on this is expected to be issued within the next 3 to 4 days.
Organic sugar is produced from organically grown sugarcane.
India has become structurally a sugar surplus country and remains a consistent exporter of sugar. During the 2021-22 sugar season, India exported approximately 110 LMT of sugar. In the last sugar season 2022-23, India restricted exports quota to about 61 LMT only, which has been exported by sugar mills.
India majorly exports its sugar to countries including Indonesia, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Sudan, Somalia, and the United Arab Emirates.
In the season 2023-24, sugar production is expected to decrease. India faced a deficit in monsoon rainfall from June to August, particularly in Maharashtra and Karnataka, which are major sugar-producing states. This has raised concerns about reduced crop yields and potential restrictions on sugar exports.
