102 sugar mills in Maharashtra conclude crushing operations for 2024-25 season

More than 50 percent of the 200 sugar mills in Maharashtra have concluded their crushing operations for the ongoing 2024-25 season.

According to a report from the Sugar Commissionerate, as of March 4, a total of 102 sugar mills have wrapped up their operations in Maharashtra. This includes 41 mills in Solapur, 22 mills in Kolhapur, 12 mills in Pune, 11 mills in Nanded, 10 mills in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and 6 mills in the Ahilyanagar region. During the same period last season, only 38 mills had closed in the state.

Sugar production in Maharashtra for the current 2024-25 season has reached 764.33 lakh quintals (approximately 76.43 lakh tonnes), showing a decline from the 959.2 lakh quintals produced during the same period last season. At present, 98 mills are still involved in sugarcane crushing operations, while 102 mills have concluded their crushing season. As of March 4, statewide mills have crushed 814.92 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, compared to 954.34 lakh tonnes during the same period last season. The state’s overall sugar recovery rate stands at 9.38%, lower than the 10.05% rate achieved at this time last season.

Industry experts suggest that mills have ended operations earlier this season due to lower yields and increased crushing capacity.

Sugar production in the state has been lower compared to the previous season due to delays in the start of the crushing season, the diversion of sugarcane, and a reduction in yield.
