Pakistan government urged to import sugar

Islamabad: The Pakistan government has been requested to import sugar as the commodity is traded at a low price in the global market.

Ibrahim Mughal, chairman AgriForum Pakistan said that it is the time the government should import sugar as sugar rates in the global market are lower. The millers are giving the wrong impression of bumper sugarcane crop for this season. In reality, the sugar output will be lower than the expected for this season.

He said, “The country’s demand is 5 million tonnes and the domestic sugar production is likely to remain between 3.5 million tonnes to 4 million tonnes.”

“The Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) should take advantage of the present situation at the global level and speed up to import one million tonne sugar,” he further added.
