Pakistan: Prime Minister raises concern over inaccurate sugar data

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has raised serious concerns over the inaccurate sugar stock data provided by the relevant ministries. During a recent cabinet meeting, he expressed displeasure, noting that faulty data could have led to misguided decisions, reported Tribune.

The prime minister observed that the data supplied by the sugar mills association was accurate, while figures from the ministries contained errors. Despite these issues, he commended the government’s timely decision-making and continuous monitoring, which enabled the export of 690,000 metric tons of sugar, bringing in crucial foreign exchange without impacting domestic prices.

PM Sharif also acknowledged the role of the Pakistan Army in halting smuggling across the western border, a move that played a vital role in stabilizing sugar prices domestically.

The prime minister highlighted positive economic developments, notably the reduction in year-on-year inflation to 4.9% in November—the lowest in six and a half years—down from 7.2% in October, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. He expressed optimism that this trend would pave the way for interest rate cuts by the State Bank of Pakistan and bring much-needed relief to low-income groups.
