Pakistan rejects sugar exports plans to avoid price hikes

Islamabad: Pakistan said no to companies that wanted to ship sugar out of the country. The government is worried that selling sugar abroad would make sugar more expensive for people in Pakistan.

The government is afraid that if they let sugar leave, a bag of sugar could cost a lot more. That’s why they said no to shipping sugar out.

The people who sell sugar (called the PSMA) asked the government to allow them to ship 1 million tons of sugar. They said Pakistan could sell sugar cheaper than other countries because it costs less to ship here. They also said this would bring in more money for Pakistan.

The PSMA said that Pakistan makes more sugar than it uses each year. They have an extra 1.5 million tons of sugar after this year’s harvest.

The government decided it’s more important to keep sugar prices low for everyone in Pakistan, even though the sugar companies have extra sugar. They don’t want sugar to become too expensive again like it did when they shipped it out of the country.
