Lahore: Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) has urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to allow the export of surplus sugar.
The PSMA has written to him explaining that till July 31, 2022, a total of 3.03 million tonnes of sugar is still available with the mills. As many as 1.8 million tonnes of sugar would be consumed before starting the new crushing season in November 2022, as per the letter.
PSMA has noted that the area under cane cultivation has increased by 10 per cent this season and the recent heavy rainfall would boost the cane output this season.
In a letter industry body claims that Pakistan will have a definite surplus of sugar to the tune of 1.2 million tonnes or more before the start of the next crushing season i.e. November, 2022.
PSMA has stated in the letter that the surplus sugar creates a financial crisis in the mills and ultimately affects the sugarcane farmers. It will be in the interest of the nation to grant permission to the mills to export surplus sugar to create an opportunity for the country to earn foreign exchange during this crisis, said the letter.
