Noorpur Thal: The intervention of the local sugar mafia has led to a hike in the sweetner prices in the Khushab district of Pakistan, reports The Express Tribune.
Sugar is sold at Rs 125 per kg in the district as against the government-fixed rate of Rs 99 per kg. The Tehsil administration is not showing any interest in monitoring sugar prices despite the local shopkeepers selling sugar at higher prices, said a customer.
District Industries Officer Muhammad Abdullah said that the government has set the official rate of sugar at Rs 99 per kg. The sugar mill owners have obtained a stay order from the Lahore High Court stating that selling sugar at this rate would increase their losses.
Consumers have demanded the Punjab government take immediate action to ensure that sugar is sold at an officially fixed rate.
