Lahore: Sugar millers in Pakistan have refused to sell sugar at Rs 70 per kg, the rate at which the government wants them to sell the sweetner.
According to the officials of the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA), selling sugar at such a low price would destroy the industry.
PSMA’s spokeperson said, “The government should take measures for the disposal of two million tonnes of surplus sugar that has been produced this year in excess of the country’s requirements. The government can fectch around $1 billion in foreign exchange by exporting 1.5 million tonnes of sugar.”
Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shahbaz had earlier asked the sugar mills to lower the sugar price to Rs 70 per kg which would provide relief to the common people. The sugar mills belonging to the Sharif family would sell sugar in the open market at Rs 70 per kg, he had announced.
Recently, country’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had announced ban on sugar exports.
