PAU, Sugarfed to work together for sugarcane research

Ludhiana: Taking steps to promote sugarcane research and development in the state, the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) organised a visit of experts from the sugar industry sector, reports Hindustan Times.

Sugarfed’s managing director Arvind Pal Singh Sandhu (IAS) and other officials visited the University and discussed the issues related to research and development in the sugarcane sector with the PAU vice-chancellor Satbir Singh Gosal and other experts in the respective fields.

Sandhu stated that there is a need to introduce high-sucrose and high-yielding sugarcane varieties that would benefit both industries as well as farmers. There is a scope to utilize sugarcane waste for ethanol production that would reduce reliance on fossil fuels, he said.

PAU Vice Chancellor SS Gosal said that importance should be given to tissue culture or micropropagation for increasing the production of quality cane seeds that would be disease free.
