PCJCCI calls for Pakistan-China cooperation in sugar industry

Lahore: Pakistan and China have the potential to produce high-quality sugar in large quantities and export it worldwide, said Nazir Hussain, President of the Pakistan-China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI), during a think tank session at the PCJCCI Secretariat.

“Collaboration between Pakistan and China in the sugarcane sector can bring significant progress, strengthening their bond,” Hussain remarked. He emphasized that the PCJCCI aimed to connect experts from both countries, providing them with a platform to share innovative ideas.

Hussain encouraged Pakistan and China to work together in boosting sugarcane production and processing to ensure the production of high-quality sugar. He added that enhanced cooperation in this field would allow both countries to cater to the global market, according to the Pakistani media.

He noted that Pakistan’s sugarcane industry could not flourish unless farmers gained access to advanced sugarcane varieties that are highly resistant to diseases.

Speaking at the event, PCJCCI Senior Vice President Brigadier (Retd) Mansoor Saeed Sheikh stressed the importance of ’tissue culture’ technology, which he said could transform sugarcane cultivation.

He highlighted that the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agriculture Science was offering training to scientists worldwide. The academy has launched 100 training courses for 4,000 participants from more than 90 countries.

More than 40 young scientists from Asia, Africa, and Latin America have participated in medium- and long-term research programs at the academy. Additionally, the academy has dispatched experts to over 20 countries to guide agricultural technology.

“Traditional seeds are not effective for planting. The best approach for sugarcane production is to use disease-free seedlings,” Sheikh stated.
