Pending cane dues, pest attack worry Naraingarh farmers

Ambala: The problems of farmers from Naraingarh are increasing as diseases like top borer and Pokkah Boeing are attacking the cane crops, reports Tribune India. Farmers are already upset over pending cane dues.

“We have to bear expenses to spray fungicides and pesticides to control the disease which is straining our pockets. We have not received cane dues from last season and now witnessing crop loss,” said farmers.

Vinod Rana, the president of Ganna Kisan Sangharsh Samiti, said, “Top borer damages sugarcane crops increasing loss of farmers. I have spent Rs 10,000 per acre to spray fungicides and pesticides to control the spread of the disease and this has increased my expenses on growing the cane crop.”

“We want the government to appoint a permanent CEO to look after the operations of the mill. At present the charge is handed over to the Naraingarh SDM,” he further added.

Rajiv Sharma, spokesman, BKU (Charuni), said, “Delay in cane payment, as well as additional expenses on spraying pesticides, has increased the financial burden of farmers. The yield is also likely to be lower due to diseases.”

“Top borer and pokkah boeng have been reported in sugarcane crop in some areas, but the situation is under control. Recommendations are being given to farmers to control the pest attack” Harish Kumar, Agriculture Development officer was quoted as saying by Harish Kumar.
