Farmers in Phagwara, Punjab, have rejected the district commissioner’s plea to cancel their proposed indefinite protest on September 27, demanding immediate action on the attached properties of Phagwara Sugar Mill owners to recover Rs 43 crore in arrears, reported Tribune India.
The farmers, led by the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Doaba), have said they will go ahead with their protest unless the administration takes ground-level action on the attached properties by September 26.
Kapurthala Deputy Commissioner Captain Karnail Singh had convened a meeting with the farmers on Monday and asked them to cancel their protest.
BKU (Doaba) general secretary Satnam Singh Sahni said the administration had not given any output to the sugarcane farmers regarding the auction of attached properties of mill owners.
“Now, the administration has given the date of September 28 for a meeting with the Punjab Government, but farmers are not in agreement with it,” Sahni said.
The farmers have been protesting for over a month, demanding payment of their arrears. They have threatened to intensify their stir if their demands are not met.
