La Carlota City, Negros Occidental: The officials of the Department of Finance (DOF) have stated that they are aiming to increase the efficiency of the sugar mills to make them competitive in the global market. Antonio Joselito Lambino II, the assistant secretary said, we want to learn more about the issues that the sugar industry is facing and understand their concerns to make it globally-competitive. He along with Senator Cynthia Villar met Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) Board Member Emilio Yulo III and other officials to discuss the issue.
Almost 60 per cent of the country’s sugar is produced by Negros Occidental. Villar said, “We have to become globally competitive as the import liberalization will be done at any time. Along with this, the industry should also focus on the developmental aspect funded under the Sugar Industry Development Act (SIDA).
Due to higher sugar prices, local food processors in Philippines sought permission to import sugar. They claim increased local sugar prices make it difficult for them, to do business. The Trade department has assured to reduce the sugar prices to match the prices of imports.
