Negros Occidental’s economy in 2025 is expected to feel the impact of falling Millgate sugar prices, said Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson.
He urged leaders of the Sugar Regulatory Administration and all sugar federations to put aside their differences and work together to address the issue of low prices.
“If this situation does not improve, it could hurt the economy of Negros,” Lacson stated.
“The challenge is that planters are unsure why sugar prices are falling. Based on supply and demand, prices should have stayed the same as last year or even increased,” he explained.
“My understanding is that there is an oversupply of refined sugar in the market. Some sugar mills have stopped refining because they cannot sell their refined sugar,” he added.
