According to the media report, the Philippines government is mulling to hike tax on sugar to recover the losses occurred due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Tax on sugar-sweetened beverages currently stands at PHP4.50 (US$0.09) for beverages sweetened with non-high-fructose corn syrup and PHP 9.00 (US$0.18) per litre for those with high-fructose corn syrup.
Many countries, like the United Kingdom, France, Ireland, Saudi Arabia, Portugal, and as well some US states, have introduced a tax on sugary drinks over the past few years.
