Manila, Philippines: The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) is mulling to sell seized smuggled sugar in Kadiwa stores this month, reports newsinfo.inquirer.
Around 4,000 metric tons of sugar will be available at Kadiwa stores.
SRA acting Administrator Pablo Luis Azcona said that the steps have been taken after the big supermarket chains stated that they would volunteer to sell sugar.
“These supermarkets are ready to give space to Kadiwa and we can sell sugar at Kadiwa prices,” he said.
According to the media report, the confiscated sugar would be sold at P70 per kilogram, the same price as those sold in Kadiwa stores.
As per the Department of Agriculture (DA), refined sugar is getting sold in Metro Manila markets at P86 to P110 per kg compared to P70 per kg a year ago.
SRA is considering selling the seized smuggled sugar in Kadiwa stores before May end, said Azcona.
After releasing 4,000 MT of sugar for sale, we are left with almost 6,000 MT of sugar and we will release it only after confirming that it is safe for human consumption, he said.
