Metro Manila, Philippines: The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) is mulling to sell 4000 Metric Tonnes (MT) of smuggled refined sugar in Kadiwa stores, said SRA board member Pablo Azcona, reports CNNPhilippines.
We are hoping to sell sugar in Kadiwa stores by May, he said. The government set up these stores last year to help farmers to sell their products directly to consumers at cheap rates due to inflated commodity prices.
Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG), the farmer’s group had earlier urged the government not to reward smugglers by selling the smuggled sugar in Kadiwa shops.
The SRA has also stated that it plans to set the suggested retail price of sugar at P85 per kg.
