Taking note of the shortfall in the sugar supply, the Philippines government is planning to import another 150,000 MT of refined sugar by mid-September.
As per the Sugar Order 7 (SO7) approved by President Marcos, as agriculture secretary and Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) board chairman, the second importation of 150,000 MT of refined sugar would be done this year.
The order has been signed by Department of Agriculture Senior Undersecretary Domingo Panganiban, acting SRA administrator Pablo Luis Azcona and acting SRA board member-millers’ representative Mitzi Mangwag.
The new order will ensure a sufficient supply of sugar for domestic consumption as well as a two-month buffer stock in the country.
The SO6 issued last February permitted the importation of 440,000 MT of sugar to increase supply and keep a check on increasing sugar prices.
