Manila: Universal Robina Corp. (URC) is expanding its Balayan mill’s capacity and helping displaced farmers by acquiring the idle assets of Central Azucarera Don Pedro Inc. (CADPI), reports Philstar.
URC issued a statement stating that the company will be using these assets including milling machinery and equipment to expand the capacity and improve the sugar recovery process at its sugar mill in Balayan, Batangas.
The time needed to expand the Balayan mill has reduced from four to two years due to the acquisition of CADPI’s machinery, said the company.
This will also help in increasing the sugar supply for consumers as the Balayan mill’s capacity would increase from 5,000 tons to 8,000 tons per day, it said.
The company is now looking forward to accommodating more sugarcane farmers at the Balayan mill to help them earn a livelihood. “The long waiting time in the truck yard is resulting in low sugar recovery for cane supplied by farmers at present,” said URC.
This would resolve soon, it said.
