Pilibhit: Department vigilant in curbing illegal sugarcane purchases

Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh: In an effort to combat the illegal purchase of sugarcane, prevent short-weighing, and crack down on the sugarcane mafias, district authorities have formed multiple teams at various levels.

The authorities have made it clear that any instances of illegal sugarcane transactions detected in the district will be thoroughly investigated. In cases where illegal activities are found, complaints will be lodged against the suspected individuals, and strict legal action will be taken, reported Live Hindustan.

The District Cane Officer emphasized that under no circumstances will the illegal purchase of sugarcane be allowed, as authorities continue their relentless efforts to curb such practices.

According to the sugar mills’ body, sugar production is likely to decline in Uttar Pradesh during the ongoing 2024-25 season. The National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Limited expects sugar output to reach 98 lakh metric tonnes (LMT), which is lower compared to 103.65 LMT in the 2023-24 season.

Recently, in a meeting focused on the interests of sugarcane farmers, a detailed discussion was held regarding the effective replacement of sugarcane varieties to combat diseases. Sugarcane farmers in some regions of the state are concerned as the Co-0238 variety of sugarcane is being affected by red rot disease.

The Chief Secretary stated that, in view of the long-term interests of the sugar industry and sugarcane farmers, sugar mills should take the initiative to replace the Co-0238 variety of sugarcane and promote the adoption of new sugarcane varieties.
